54.03 ROADS

4.03.2 Access Roads.
(4) (b)
(i) All exposed surface areas within cut and fill
slopes were revegetated after construction of
access roads, as described in Section 2.05.4
Reclamation Plan - General Requirements.
(ii) Riprap and vegetative sediment filters have
been used at selected places. Riprap has been
placed at required drainage structures. Straw
dikes are most commonly used at areas of tem-
porary construction. See Strata Dike Specifi-
cations Surface Water Appendix. A11 drainage
structures reduce overland flow velocity, re-
duce run-off volume or trap sediment.
A special sediment trap was constructed a[ the
shop level to increase trapping of sediment.
This trap is maintained on a regular basis.
•
(iii) Colorado Westmoreland Inc. is prepared to em-
ploy additional measures if those presently in
use do not sat isEactorily minimize erosion,
resultant siltation, and disturbance of the
prevailing hydrological balance. No such ad-
ditional measures are believed necessary at
this time.
(c) The access roads have drainage ditches at the toe of
cu[ slopes and cross drain culverts have been con-
structed at selected intervals. All cross drain cul-
verts at switchbacks or fills discharge water below the
fill. No access roads have been constructed without
drainage diCChes to minimize erosion on the roadbed.
(d) The access roads have been gravel surfaced to maximize
usage based on traffic and the weight and speed of ve-
hicles. 'This sloped gravel surface prevents ponding,
provides erosion control and provides road surface sta-
bilty. See Figure 2.05.3, Volume 8A for road cross-
sections.
(e) (i) All culverts
access roads
square feet.
the 10-year,
shown in the
8.
used in construction of existing
have an end area of less than 35
They are designed [o safely pass
24-hour precipitation even[ as
Surface Water Appendix, Volume
• Revised 08/01/84
Revised 10/01/87
20
