~°~\ United States Soil
s`l~F) Department of Conservation
~° Agriculture Service
Mr. William Tezak
P.O. Box 1389
Canon City, ~. 81212
Dear Bill,
Feb. 11, 1987
783-2981
The following is in reference to our telephone conversation of Feb. 9, 1987 >n
which you requested my input on updating a limited impact mined land reclamation plan
for the Lily mine site located east of Monarch Pass and north of Garfield, Colorado in
Chaffee County.
My only ccmt~ents on the previously developed reclamation plan are 1) there did not
appear to be any provision for mulching the seeded area. Since there is very little soil
development to begin with I feel that a minimum of 9000 lbs/acre of native meadow hay
will help to build up the organic matter as well as more effectively stabilize the site.
The mulch should be spread out evenly and crimped into the soil to prevent it from
blowing away. 2) It is probably not feasible to plant lbnderosa pine trees since the
area is approximately 11,000 feet in elevation and above the reasonable limits in which
lbnderosa pine will successfully graa. In fact, I would not recommend planting any trees
since it would only create an added expense for plants that will eventually cortte in on
their own once the grass is well established and the site conditions are more suitable.
At this point I feel that it is more important to stabilize the soil with grass than to
try and get trees to grow.
In reevaluating the grass seeding mixture that you mentioned with respect to species
and seeding rates I feel that you could probably stay with what you have. They are well
adapted to the site, proportional to recamnended rates and are about as good as any that
could be otherwise reclst¢nended.
If I can be of any further assistance to you >n this matter please don't hesitate
to give ttte a call.
Sincerely,
L%~~~~
ALan R.
