184
• 'site: 5MF324 (Figs 5, 50, 51).
site Type: Petrograph.
zvcation: NW;SW';, Sec. 23, T5n, R92w; UTM Zone 13, E271,750m., N4,421,200m.
Description: 5h1F324 is a petrograph site, located in a short southwest-trend-
ing box canyon tributary to Ralson Draw, 100 m, south. The site elevation is
6760 ft. (2,060 m.). Vegetation includes bunch grass, cheatgrass, thistle,
sagebrush, serviceberry, and, on the slopes to the north, juniper.
The rock art panels are located on a low, southeast-facing sandstone out-
crop, with a slight overhang. They consist of four panels of abstract de-
signs executed in red pigment, and incised figures which include a thunderbird-
like motif and other zoomorphic figures. In places, the incised figures are
superimposed on the red pigment.
• There is no apparent cultural disturbance such as vandalism or recent
artwork, but cattle that are grazed in Ralston Draw utilize the sheltered area.
The panels are exposed to the weather and portions are heavily weathered.
Diagnostic Artifacts: None.
Evacuation: 5MF324 has potential for yielding information important to pre-
history in addition to having an unique set of pictographs and petroglyphs.
The potential midden in front of the rock art panel may have considerable depth
and may also obscure earlier examples of the rock art. We recommend that 5MF324
be nominated to the NRHP.
