179

site: 5MF329 (Figs 4, 47, 48).
site Type: Open architectural.
Location: SW!sNE!„ Sec. 22, Ton, R91w; UTM Zone 13, E279,950m., N4,464,640m.
Description: 5MF329 is an historic site located in Moody Gulch, approximately
5 mi. west of the Tuttle residence on an unimproved jeep trail. The site is
situated on the west side of Moody Gulch at the base of a west-trending ridge,
facing south into the junction of the gulch and an unnamed drainage. The near-
est water is a spring 200 m. east which fills a modern stocktank and a natural
pond. The elevation is 7320 ft. (2,231 m.). Vegetation observed at the site
includes sagebrush, thistle, aspen, serviceberry, Gamble's oak and grasses.
The site consists of four structures, all in poor repair. Features 1
•
and 3 are built of logs. Feature 1 is a free-standing dwelling, and feature
3 is a semisubterranean dugout partially excavated into the hillside. Features
2 and 4, totally collapsed, are both made of milled lumber. Feature 2 is a
multiroom structure, possibly a dwelling, and feature 4 is a two-hole privy.
The site covers an area 30 by II2 m. Material culture observed includes
a galvanized iron cistern, assorted crockery sherds, broken window glass, and
a Clipper brand kerosene lantern. The site is relatively undisturbed, with
the exception of the presence of a jeep trail that passes in front of the lo-
cality. A modern stock pond lies 75 .m. to the west.
Diagnostic Artifacts: None.
evaluation: The historical significance should be determined by a trained
Colorado historian with adequate archival evidence available.
