15s
• site: 5RT20 (Fig. 2).

site Type: Open lithic.
rocation: SE';NE;, Sec. 9, T5n, R87w; UTM Zone 13, E317,750m., N4,474,950m.
Description: 5RT20 is located on the west side of a low hill, 20 m. east
of a seasonal drainage flowing into Grassy Creek, and roughly 150 m. south
of Nofstger-Ziegler Reservoir. The site elevation is 6740 ft. (2,054 m.).
Local vegetation includes sagebrush, grasses, cactus, wild onion, and service-
berry. The site consists of a thin scatter of flakes distributed on the
flat area above and paralleling the drainage. Cultural materials include
flakes, a projectile point, and a bifacially worked knife. There were no
real concentrations, but much of the material was observed near the datum,
with rapid decrease in density farther away. The materials were distrib-
• uted in an area 20 by 220 m.
5RT20 appears to be similar in nature to 5RT19 because artifactual
materials were seen mainly in deflated and unvegetated areas. Also, 5RT19
is located only 200 m, to the south of this site. No visible cultural dis-
turbance was present, although local collectors have been in the area for
a number of years. The site is subject to erosion, and an active arroyo
is located only meters from the west edge of the site.
Diagnostic artifacts: Projectile point, Type IVA; bifacial tool, Type IID.
evaluation: 5RT20 has no potential for yielding information important to
prehistory at any level and should not be nominated to tine NRHP. However,
as with 5RT19, we do recommend that the site be afforded protection avail-
able under other statutes and that it be salvaged if ever endangered. This
recommendation is based on the site's proximity to 5RT22.
L
