126
site: ,5RT21 (Figs 1, 19).
site Type: Open architectural.
Location: SW!sSE';, Sec. 26, TSn, R87w; UTM Zone 13, E329,920m., N4,469,150m.
Description: 5RT21 is an historic site composed of six architectural fea-
tures in an area 60 by 80 m. The site faces west toward Middle Creek which
lies 40 m. west at an elevation of 6960 ft. (2,121 m.). The site is situated
on a gentle west slope and sheltered by high ground to the north and north-
east. Vegetation around the site includes grasses and sagebrush. The
architectural features are almost entirely deteriorated, being defined on
the basis of stone-walled foundation outlines and depressions that were par-
tially dug into the hillside. Portable cultural materials visible include
horseshoes, glass, cast-iron stove parts, a woman~s shoe, broken crockery,
nails, and other trash. No cultural or natural disturbance other than weath-
ering is visible.
Diagnostic Artifacts: None.
evaluation: 5RT21 may be the location of one of the earlier homesteads
in the area. No final decision should be made concerning the site's nomi-
nation to the NRHP until a proper archival search has been carried out.
The absence of any architectural remains except foundations rules out nomi-
nation on architectural grounds.
