deposited soil types. However, no_ mottling gleying or other indication
' ~ of saturated conditions [h a[ would indicate subirrigation were
encountered during [he soil survey. A negative finding of prime farmland
by the SCS also states that subirrigation does no[ occur (Appendix B).
No irrigated agriculture exists on the mine plan area. Water in
ephemeral drainages is present only in direct response to precipitation
or snowmel[. Thus no water would be available during periods of soil
water depletion for irrigation. Topography of [he site (see Exhibit IV)
would make irrigation very difficult.
5.2 Williams Fork and Yampa Rivers
;~
• The flood plains of both the Yampa and Williams Fork rivers are underlain
in spots by quaternary alluvial deposits. Land use of the flood plain of
the Yampa in [he vicinity of Craig includes irrigated hayland and
pasture land, The flood plain of the Williams Fork at the confluence of
[he Williams Fork and Yampa Rivers and east of Hamilton has irrigated
agriculture. Hardaway et a1 (1977) found that an AVFs existed and was
associated with the Yampa River, Depending upon it's significance to
agriculture these Flood plains of these rivers where it is underlain by
alluvium may be alluvial valley floors.

•1
-43-
