Egidi, Hes, and Gates of the
Colorado Depardnent of public Health and Environment (the Department) requesting information on
radiation monitoring during open-pit mining operations. Replies to your questions come from three of
the Department's Environmental divisions.
'The Radiation Management Unit (RMin of We hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division
offers the following comments.
1. 'The RMU has no jurisdictional oversight of quarry operations That may produce radioactive
media incidental to the principal mining activities. The RMU will make suggestions based
on expertise in radiometric measurement and evaluation.
2. The RMU does not have any specific written guidance regarding quarry operations. We can
offer reasonable suggestions for assessing coacems about aay produced radioactive media
.Drill cuttings and boreholes can be quickly screened using aGeiger-Moiler or Scintilation-
type gamma-ray monitoring device. Boreholes can be logged with agamma-ray detector to
find zones of increased uranium br thorium mineralization. Samples or zones with elevated
readings can be further charactcrized using mineralogy andlor radioisotope measurement
techniques. Aradiation-monitoring program for workers would be prudent. Radiation
exposure to people should be less than 0.025 REM per year above background.
