Appendix K-5
- • 165 South Union Boulevard, Union Tower, Suite 1000 Lakewood,CO 80228
BE&K/TERRANEXT MEMORANDUM
To: Don MacDonald
Coors Energy Company
From: Gary R. Lake
BE&K/Terranext
Re: Existing and Post-closure Surface WaYai`"IeVlhoff Control
at Keenesburg Mine Site (Weld County, Colorado)
Date: May 21, 1998
Existine and Proposed CEC Site Drainage Systems
The existing CEC site drainage plan and facilities are discussed in Appendix K, "Technical
Revision Drainage Control Plan II," dated June, 1994. Existing diversion/drainage ditches
that have been constructed along the access and haul roads and azound the north and east sides
. of the CEC property presently serve to convey surface water runoff to Sediment Pond 2. The
existing drainage facilities, as well as existing site topographic features, aze identified in
Appendix M-1 of the Permit. It is noteworthy that total long-term sediment accumulation in
Sediment Pond 2 has not been a problem in twelve years of use. The Dugout Pond shall
remain undisturbed at site closure in order to provide a continued wildlife habitat, in
accordance with direction by the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology (CDMG). The
Dugout Pond was created dtuing CEC active mining operations and did not exist prior to CEC
developing the site for mining. The proposed permanent drainage facilities for final site
reclamation are indicated in Appendix Q-1 of the Permit.
The Final Reclamation Contour Map and Drainage Plan (Appendix Q-1) has been designed to
improve and promote positive surface water drainage away from both the existing A- and B-Pit
cell areas. For this reason, the proposed final ground surface contour elevations over the pit
cell areas have been modified from those initially shown on the 1986 Reclamation Plan map in
:.
Telephone: 303 914.1700 Facsimile: 303 914.1709 www.bektnxLCOm
