(970) 675-2417
Fax (970) 675-5211
After looking over the situation at your gravel pit, I feel we have two main goals, namely livestock
and wildlife use. The site is one that will require more flexibility in species selection and planting
times than a typical dry land pasture.
Site: The following grass varieties aze selected based on their ability to establish short term or long
term, sustain livestock grazing and establish ground cover, Normally I would use only 2 to 3 types
of grass, however in difficult sites like this a prefer using several types of grasses. This enables each
grass to respond according to its individual performance chazacteristics. Refer to enclosed
information for individual grass descriptions and chazacteristics. Note: green underline indicates
good traits, red indicates poor traits for drv sites with limited soil cover.
• Western Wheat grass: PLS 3.5 pounds per acre
• Intermediate Wheat grass: PLS 3 pounds per acre
• Slender Wheat grass: PLS 3 pounds per acre
• Pubescent Wheat grass: PLS 3 pounds per acre
• Russian Wild Rye: PLS 2 pounds per acre
• Sheep Fescue: PLS .5 pounds per acre
Total pounds of pure live seed per acre 15 (fifteen). Estimated cost $42 per acre for seed.
How to plant? In your circumstance you could drill into the top soil or broadcast the seed and
harrow the seed in. Drilled seed will have a higher success rate. Fall planted grass will take
advantage of early spring moisture. Try to avoid grazing the first yeaz.
I hope this will be beneficial to you. If you have any questions please give me a call.
Sincerely,
~~D nr~i~,~-.~-
Bill Ekstrom
Extension Agent (Ag. & 4-H/Youth)
Colorado Smte University, U.S. Department of Agriculture and Rio Blanco County cooperating.
Cooperative Extension programs are available to all without discrimination.
