MINING PLAN • . EXHIBIT D (coNr.l
This land is presently used as rangeland and for mining clay
and stone. The area covered by this permit application was
picked because of the quality of the material available and its
low wildlife and agricultural value. There are no surface waters
or man made structures on the site. Grazing is limited on this
site because the soil type and lack of water limits the growth
potential of the grasses on the site. The site is covered with
patches of Juniper, Scrub Oak and Pinon trees as well. A parcel
of land near the existing mining operations is designated PRE-LAW
DISTURBANCE area. This is where mining took place between 1958
and 1977 when M.L.R.B. Permit M-77-326 was issued. Most of this
area will remained undisturbed over the life of the mine. The
area permitted by Adience is not part of this new mine, although
our permit surrounds Adience's mine.
The entrance road is an existing 20 feet wide road that
enters the site from Siloam Road. The location of the road as
shown on the map exhibits supplied with this application and will
remain for the landowners use when mining is complete. Periodic
grading is necessary to keep the road in good condition. There
are numerous trails on the property. These trails are used for
access to the site and will be used as surface rock collection
activities take place. We have found that if these trails are
not used for one growing season the grasses take over and it
becomes difficult to distinguish from surrounding areas. The
entrance road is an existing road that supplies access to the
adjoining clay mine operated by Adience, Inc. The road is also
used by the landowner for access to areas north and east of the
site. As mining progresses and the road is disturbed or removed,
it will be reworked to allow access to property north of the mine
site.
GEOLOGIC SETTING
The sandstone material to be mined is a deposit of lower
Cretaceous aged, Dakota Sandstone ~ Purgatoire Formation (Kdp).
This particular site is located north of Owl Canyon and east of
Siloam Road. According to the U.S.G.S., the sandstone deposit
has a thickness up to 200 feet. The sandstone deposit on this
site is on a gently sloping mesa typical to the area in western
Pueblo County. The usable upper part of the deposit is strati-
fied and varies overall 15 feet to 20 feet of thickness. The
strata varies from 4 inches to 24 inches in thickness. In
places, the sandstone has an extremely thin layer of topsoil-
6
