SU`L`SARY 1
This report contains the documented approval and conditions for approval
for mining within 500 feet of an abandoned underground mine. These
approvals are required by the Surface Aiining Control and Reclamation Act
of 1977, Public Lav 95-87, Section 515(b)(12)(A) and the regulations of
the Colorado Hued Land Reclamation Board for Coal `fining (1980),
Section 4.19.
GENERAL
The Edna Surface Hine, located about 3 miles north of Oak Creek, has
been in operation for more than a decade. The proposed mile permit area
is underlain with several abandoned mines as indicated by the map in
attachment A. This map lists nine abandoned sines with [helr dates of
closure, that are located in this area. Only three sines - the Zeystone
dine (1965), the Hayden Mine (1951) and the Arcowhead `tine (L940) - are
associated with this approval. Supplied information about these nines
and a copy of the geologic column of the area is contained in attach-
ment B. These abandoned mines are located in the Lower coal 3roup,
which contains the Yo. 1, tlo. 2 and ;do. 3 coal beds. The Edna Surface
Mine is located in the Gfadge coal bed - a 6 Eoot coal seam of the middle
coal group - that is vertically separated from the lower coal group by
about 900 feet.
CONCLUSION
The proposed surface mining permit area submitted for approval contains
several abandoned underground coal mines. The full extent of the abandoned
workings may not be known. However, the vertical separation (about
900 feet) between the operating surface mine in the Wadge seam, and the
abandoned underground mines in [he lower group, precludes any apparent
subsidence hazards.
RECOMHEWATION
Subject to the submitted plan (attached), blasting approval is hereby
granted for the Pittsburgh and Hidway Coal Mining Company, I.D.
No. OS-00303, for mining the proposed area.

Ri' and L.
