-2-

SIIGGESTID SOLUTION, cont.
•
reclamation plan are to: (1) protect the area from erosion, (2) maintain or
improve the resources, and (3) maintain an acceptable appearance. This
area has adequate topsoil to provide an opportunity to meet these objectives.
Items that involve all gravel pit reclamations:
1. SHAPING - Ideal shaping after gravel is removed consists of north
and east slopes less .than four to one (].L,.°), and south and zest slopes
less than five to one (12°). Many areas will not permit this type of
shaping. A two to one slope is the +~+A~t mim slope for seeding. Contour
grading and terraces not only conserve moisture, but also provide a site
for gees and shrubs that may enhance the landscape. Scarification after
grading will allow better adherence during top soiling operation.
• ~ 2. MULCH - A soil mulch of straw or hay applied with asphalt to
hold it in place is recommended, or ae a substitute, a wood fiber (silvifiber)
applied with a hydroseeder can be used subsequent to broadcast seeding and
soil coverage. Mulching on steep south or west facing slopes is highly
recommended. Agronomy blankets have been used in Colorado on steep road
cuts and would be beneficial in this case.
3. FERTILIZER - 60-SO#/acre of both nitrogen and phosphorous are
recommended during seeding.
Q. TOP SOIL - All top soil should be composted. 6-S inches of
topsoil should be distributed over the site after shaping has been done.
Specifics for this site Problems: Fluctuating water
table~Salt Meadow
1) Shaping 3/1 inclusions
2) 6-S inch top soil distributed over area
