ERO Resources
•
A soil survey was conducted on the B Portal portion of the Western
Fuels-Utah, Inc. Deserado permit area during the summer and fall of 1961.
This survey was to supplement the soil assessment of the entire permit
aria performed during 1980. The total area surveyed in greater detail was
about 250 acres. Soils were surveyed, mapped, analyzed and evaluated in
accordance with state and federal'guidelinea and the National Cooperative
Soil Survey standards.
Eleven map units were delineated on the B Portal survey area. Three pits
were dug during 1981 field observations. Typical profiles were described
and soil samples were obtained from these pits. Upon receipt of
laboratory data, the soils were evaluated and placed in one of four
classes. The purpose was to olassify the soils by suitability and depth.
Most of Lhe surface and subsurface soil horizons rated fair as a source of
topsoil material. Nithin the area to be ctripped of topsoil, estimates
• show that when all suitable topsoil material is stripped there will be
enough material to replace a layer of about 10 to 15 inches in average
thickness over the affected areas.
•
i
