ERO Resouroes
•
12. pot{
The soils mapped on the permit area haw bwn oatsgorized into four main
suitable depth classes.
1 Deep soils, deeper than 40 inches
2 MoWrately deep soils, 20 to 40 inches deep
3 Shallow soils, 10 to 20 inches deep
4 Rook outcrop, scattered rocky soils 1 to 20 inches deep, saline
and alkali soils
•
Most of the soils rated fair in terms of topsoil suitability throughout
their surface and subsoil horizons. Illustration C giros results of the
laboratory analyses.
Areas with e~osed rock or soils too shallow (often flaggy or channery) to
be of practical use for topsoil removal and reclamation were decignated as
rock outcrop.
a. TOPSOIL SUITABILITY CIASSIFICATION
•
The soils aeries and series variants haw been classified from 1 to 4.
Class 1 represents soil material with fair to good topsoil suitability to
a depth of more than 40 inches. Class 2 includes moderately deep soil
materials with 20 tc 40 inches of fair to good topsoil. Class 3 contains
soil materials with fair to good topsoil suitability to a depth of 10 to
20 inches. Class 4 represents land types and soils unsuitable for topsoil
material. There ere no Class 1 soils in the B Portal area due to the
steep slopes which prohibit formation of deep soils.
A discussion of topsoil suitability by class is provided for each soil
series or series variarrt. The mapping units contain various slope and
erosion phases as well as oog7lexes or associations of soil caries phases
and phases of series variants. These mapping units are classified in
II,I- 7
