DMG does not consider your email to be an objection to the
application from BLM. Therefore, if BLM desires to submit official comments please submit
such comments in writing and on BLM letterhead. However, I can respond informally to your
informal email inquiry.
The original application does not appear to address the potential of encountering historic
tailings in the alluvium.
The original application indicates that the excavation activity will be conducted in a
manner to retain surface drainage within the affected land boundary but does not address
potential impacts to groundwater if tailings are encountered.
The original application appears to address flood issues by virtue of placing the fuel
storage area above the 100 year floodplain.
A complete copy of the application is available for review at the DMG offices in Denver or
Durango.
Wally
-----Original Message-----
From: Loren wickstromC~blm.gov [mailto:loren wickstrom~blm.gov]
Sent: Friday, November 04, 2005 10:43 AM
To: wally.ericksonc~state.co.us
Subject: Upper Animas S&G Comments
Comments regarding the Upper Animas Sand and Gravel Pit, Silverton
Colorado
Zs there a contingency plan if they encounter mill tailings?
Is there a contingency plan to prevent off site flow of surface and ground
water?
Is there a contingency plan to address the potential for flooding?
Thank you for the opportunity to provide comments.
Loren Wickstrom
Geologist
Bureau of Land Management
1
