Revised 11/85
• If there is movement in the landslide area, it will be in the best
interest of Bear Coal Company to carefully evaluate the movement and
determine the best course of action. Any evaluation which may be
required will be completed with the cooperation and consultation of the
Division.
Barrier Pillars
Barrier pillars are designed based on the experience gained by Bear Coal
during its more than 50 years of mining and most recently, its
experience in the Bear No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 mines.
Barrier pillars are designed to protect men and equipment, act as a
partition in separating mine panels, to support main entries, and to
serve as a firewall in case a panel were to catch fire. The barrier
pillars are also designed to achieve the maximum recovery of reserves
without endangering the mine employees.

_pg_
