Combination of surface runoff and ground water. Surface water remains perched on heavy clay soil,
slow penetration. Fine gravel layer at 18 " is saturated, water level in pit quickly rises to 8" once last
clay layer is penetrated. White mineral deposits on soil surface and plant material, presumably left
by evaporation of surface water.
