I have reviewed this new application with District Wildlife Manager Obe Lowry and am familiar
with the site from past visits during an earlier comment phase. The comments we made earlier,
which were included with this application, are still valid as the proposal is essentially identical to
the Drevious plan. A few additional paints:
The setback distance from the South Platte River is a signficant factor. If mining is kept
' back 400' as is currently proposed, the impacts from the planned work should easily be
mitigated for by the wetland aeation project on the east side of the river. If coser
' encroachment occurs, there will be signficant removal of trees from the riparian conidor
along the west river bank In that event, we would suggest additional mitigating measures -
planting of native cottonwoodsMrillows in the remaining riparian zone and removal of
livestock grazing in the riparian zone.
The plan for the wetland in Parcel B is confusing. One part of the application indicates that
' no open water will result, but one of the maps clearly shows an open water area. We feel
that the wetland would be more valuable to wildlife with an open water component Since
some open water in the current wetland will be lost, we suggest that at least an equal
amount of open water be replaced.
The wildlife section slightly overstates the value of the new reservoirs to waterfowl, but this is
not a significant point
The plan to leave the trees at the south end of Parcel A is excellent!
