<br />GEOTECHNICAL REVIEW <br />ORCHARD VALLEY COAL MINE <br />PAONIA, COLORADO <br />FOR COLORADO WESTMORELAND, INC. <br />1.0 INTRODUCTION <br />• <br />• <br />1.1 GENERAL <br />Colorado Westmoreland, Inc. owns and operates the <br />Orchard Valley Coal Mine north of Paonia, Delta County, <br />Colorado. The site of the mine is shown on Plate 1, Vicinity <br />Map. The mine is located on a steep slope, on the north side <br />of the North Fork Gunnison River. <br />The mine surface facilities have been developed on <br />several benches that were constructed partly as cuts and <br />partly as fills. Four benches or levels are presently used <br />for the surface operations; the highest fan level at elev- <br />ation approximately 7,420, where the intake shaft, the fan <br />and the water tank are located; the portal level at elev- <br />ation approximately 7,200, where two mine portals, the bath- <br />house, and other facilities are located; the office and ware- <br />house level at elevation approximately 7,025, where the <br />office warehouse, tire shop and surge bin are located; and <br />the crushing and screening level at elevation approximately <br />c[oairoQO cowu~mw, u+c. <br />
