- 15 -
•

•
grees. All of the cut slopes in soil have been carefully and
successfully revegetated. It should be mentioned that re-
vegetation of cut slopes that are so steep is very unusual.
Successful revegetation of cut slopes and very favorable
physical properties of the colluvial soils have contributed
to the generally very good stability of all cuts. Sloughs
of these cuts are practically non-existent and no other in-
stability features have been observed during our inspection.
Obviously,. the cut slopes on the order of 50 degrees are
very steep for unconsolidated sediments. The experience of
several years shows, however, that no stability problems have
been encountered. We feel that for this reason, no remedial
actions are required for cuts excavated in soil.
The owner and operator of the mine should be aware that
there is some risk that local failures may occur in these
cuts.
4.5 MAN-MADE FILLS
There is a substantial number of large fills that have
been constructed .on the site. Fills were used at practically
all operational levels of the mine. Numerous fills have been
constructed along the road that interconnects individual
mine levels. There is little information on the construction
of these fills available. It is probable that many of these
fills have not been constructed as engineering fills; they
might have been constructed as dumped fills only. Some in-
formation is available on the material and construction pro-
cedures of the highest fill that forms most of the crushing
and screening level, This fill has been constructed from
various materials, including possibly coal, that were dumped
~oa+mno caanarow, n~c.
