Introduction
Peabody has constructed rock check dams in reclaimed drainage channels
to successfully control erosion and head cutting. Peabody will continue
to utilize rock check dams to control and prevent erosion in drainage
channels. The existing rock check dams (No. 1 to No. 6 and No. 15) were
evaluated and the proposed rock check dams (No. 7 to No. 14) were
designed to be stable and handle the design flow.
Desi n
All check dams will be designed, constructed, and maintained to safely
pass the 100-year, 24-hour storm. The peak runoff from the design storm
was determined by use of the SEDCAD+ computer model.
It was assumed that the rock check dams would act as a short section of
riprap channel and SEDCAD+ was used to determine and size the rock in
the existing and proposed check dams. Addendums 1 and 2 contain the
SEDCAG+ outputs for check dams No. 1 to No. 6 and No. 15, and No. 7 to
No. 14, respectively.
Check Dams
The location of the existing check dams No. 1 to No. 6 in the reclaimed
drainage channel above Pond 004 are depicted on Exhibit 7-7. Figure
13-8-1 shows the cross section of these rock check dams.l Listed below
is a summary of the specifications of check dams No. 1 to No. 6 and No.
15.

13-8-1 Revised 07/24/90
