M98177GE
Surface water should not be allowed to cascade over the face of
any cut or fill slopes. Cut and fill slopes should be constructed
with surface diversion ditches at the top and possibly also at the
mid slope to intercept surface water and divert it off of and away
from the slopes. The surface drain ditch concept is presented on
Figure 5.
The face of the slope should be contoured and tailored to promote
rapid runoff of surface water. Surface water should not be allowed
to pond or puddle on the face of or in the vicinity of any slope.
Slopes faces should be protected from erosion by vegetation or
other appropriate erosion protection methods.
6.0 FOUNDATION RECOMMENDATIONS
Geotechnical engineering considerations which influence the
foundation design and construction recommendations presented below
are discussed in Appendix C.
6.1 Truck Loadout Surge Bin
i We have analyzed drilled piers and spread footings as potential
foundation systems for the proposed truck load out surge bin
structure. These are discussed below. We are available to discuss
other foundation types.
we recommend that the entire structure be supported on only one
foundation type. Combining foundation types will result in differ-
ential and unpredictable foundation performance between the varying
i foundation types.
i All of the design parameters presented below are based on tech-
niques performed by an experienced contractor, high quality crafts-
manship, care during construction and post construction cognizance
of the potential soil volume change hazard, with appropriate post
construction maintenance. The spread footing recommendations
include recommended design and construction techniques to reduce
the influence of volume changes of soil materials supporting the
foundation but should not be interpreted as solutions for complete-
ly mitigating the potential for movement from volume changes of
~ soil material supporting footings.
6.1.1 Drilled Piers, Truck Loadout Surge Bin
Drilled piers or caissons that are drilled into stiff clay
material may be used to support the proposed structure.
