MI?® BRUSH TYPE/ASPEN SUBTYPE
• The mixed brush type/aspen subtype vegetation type within the affected
area occupies 1762 acres or 83.08 of.the total undisturbed Lands in the
study area. It is predaninant on all slopes and aspects in the study
area except for the drier slopes in the southwestern section of the
permit area. It was the rmst diverse vegetation type stuiied with 38
different species enwuntered in Dover quadrats and a species diversity
index of 2.72. The type i.s characterized by the presence of five shrub
species, Utah serviceberry, ocmmn chokecherry, Ganibel oak and Basin
big sagebrush distributed in a roughly-cltmrped fashion throughout
oantinu~us stands of rmuntain snowberry. Aspen stands were intermingled
within the type along draws and other areas of high soil troi.sture at
the upper elevations of the study site. For the purpose of evaluating
vegetation Dover, frequency, productivity and shrub density, aspen] is
o0nsi.dered aS part of the mixed brush type/aspen subtype. Tree density,
age and basal area and shrub height estimates are described separately
for aspen.
• Of the five shrub species, snowbeny provided the greatest Dover with
2.08 basal and 14.98 canopy cover (37$ relative shrub canopy cover).
It oocurYed in 45 of the 58 Dover quadrats surveyed and was by far the
shrub species Brost coanonly encountered (77.58 frequency). Of the other
four shrub species, chokecherry and Gambol oak evidenced the highest
basal Dover (0.38) while Gambol oak shooed the highest canopy weer
(7.58). Relative to the upland sagebrush vegetation type, total shrub
basal rover was lower (2.8~ oa~ared to 9.08) although canopy rover was
much higher (39.98 vs 16.98).
Total vegetation basal rover was 15.98 and was dominated by the grass
aryl forb strata (7.2 and 5.88, respectively as oonpared to 2.88 for
shrubs). The must cunron grass species enwuntered were Poa pratensis
(Kentucky bluegrass) , 3.8~ rover and 39.78 fret ~oncy, and Agropyron
trachycaulum (slender wheatgrass), 2.1~ Dover and 32.8 fre~cy.
Commn forb species inclu3ed Achillea millefolium (wmrnn yarrow),
1.28 rover and 318 frequency, Agastache urticifolia (nettleleaf
•
- 349b - (Rev, 5/86)
