' tXHIBIT I <br />SOILS INFORMATION <br />Two sails predominate in the area, the Numa Clay loam and <br />Potter and Stoneham gravelly looms. The Numa soil is at the <br />western and northern boundaries of the existing pit (Photo I-1 ). <br />' The pit boundary also is that soil boundary between the Numa and <br />Potter and Stoneham soils. The actual commodity being mined is <br />the Potter and Stoneham although the Numa soils have competent <br />gravels beneath the solum, actually the C horizon, and are being <br />mined in other areas. <br />The Potter and Stoneham gravelly looms are the dominant <br />' soils mapped in the area to be mined, however, field review <br />indicated that the mapping unit is mis-mapped and the actual <br />soils that predominate are of the stoneham soil series. The <br />' difference between the Potter and Stoneham is one of depth to <br />lithic material. The Potter is described to 9 inches and is to <br />have indurated caliche (petrocalcic horizon) at or about this <br />' depth. This soil was not found on the area to be mined. <br />Photo's I-2, 3, and 4 depict the Stoneham soil profile and <br />the gravelly (often sandy) C horizon. <br />The Stoneham soils contain varying amounts of gravel <br />throughout the profile, but the C horizon starts at about 14 to <br />' 20 inches beneath the surface thus leaving very little topsoil <br />for stockpiling or reclamation. What topsoil there was on these <br />soils appears to have been removed from the site or incorporated <br />into the sand and gravel as "binder". <br />The soils generally have 10 to 14 inches of topsoil that can <br />be removed for reclamation purposes. This material is usually <br />sandy or gravelly and is subject to wind erosion. The organic <br />matter content is low and the water holding capacity is also low. <br />Rehabilitation will be difficult due to the potential wind <br />erosion problems and the low water holding capacity. Foc revege- <br />tation purposes 6,000 pounds of manure per acre would provide <br />necessary water holding ability and mulch to reduce the erosion <br />hazard that comes with the lack of organic matter content. The <br />manure will also have enough straw mulch incorporated in it to <br />' reduce or preclude wind erosion. <br /> <br /> <br />I <br />II " <br />
