• ~IBIT C
WATER INFORMATION
The site to be reclaimed is not expected to affect surface-
water or ground-water systems.
t There will be no project water requirements. Material is
pit run and classified. Therefore no flow rates, annual volumes,
' or water development for mining or reclamation will be required.
No water rights are affected by the mining operation. No
National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) permit
is necessary.
The hydrology of the area is controlled by the
unconsolidated surficial deposits of Quaternary Age. This
material is the older gravels and alluvium of Pre-Bull Lake Age,
and overlies the major source and control of water in the area.
The Upper Cretaceous Niobrara Formation which consists of
calcareous shales and limestones controls the ground-water
hydrology. The material being mined is a remanent of the
' alluvium and in itself is an island of this alluvium. Water that
does fall on the land in the form of rain rapidly infiltrates the
alluvium to great depths. Due to the rapid infiltration and
obviously high transmissivities of the pre-Bull Lake Age alluvium
t no groundwater is perched or retained in the area of the mining.
No groundwater is expected to pass through the mining area except
at the alluvium-shale interface. This interface is estimated to
be at least 30 feet below the bottom of the existing operation.
As evidenced during a field visit, the landform being mined is an
island or cap of alluvium that sits above the shales. The
circumjacent drainages are generally suggestive of this
' phenomenon. The lack of a defined drainage within the area being
mined also supports this fact.
t The pit bottom is at the elevation of maximum extraction.
No additional excavation will be done. From this point on all
gravel removal will be lateral and will not interrupt the
' hydrology of the area.
No water occurs on site. Any water for fire suppression and
' dust control will have to be hauled to the site.

1 11
