debris is present. It is saturated with spring runoff water vrhich provides
. seepage flow all swnmer and fall. Landslide debris (LS on the Geology F?ap)
is present on the east side of Grassy Creek. This debris is composed of
shaley material deposited by translational slides. The ;naterial appears
to be in a stable condition.
:4 rnri-iirc
The Grassy Creek D?ine area is situaied on the west limb of the north
plunging Fish Creek Anticline. Beds dip westerly from 2 to 4° on the east
to 14 to 16° on the west. Beds have a plunge co;nponent to the north which
increases steadily northward from almost zero to near vertical in the area
of an old strip ;nine north of the Grassy Creek "line (see geologic cross-sections).
Gradients of Grassy Creek coincide with the north plunge throughout the
permit area.
Two cross sections through the mine area have been prepared and are shown
on the following two fold-out pages. The locations of these cross-sections
are shown on the Geology ~?a p. Electric logs of drill holes 75-2, J6-3, 76-4,
79-1, 79-4A, 79-4B, and 79-5 are included as appendices in Volume 2 of this
permit. Lithologic logs of drill holes Brueggen kl-1B, Long irl-40, and Frink
ii41-59 are included i~mrnediately after the electric logs in Volume 2.
A geologic cross-section through Pit 4 is attached. There are five
coal seams and all are defined to be Riders of the Pinnacle coal seam. The
top rider is not mined since it is too oxidized. Rider 5 does not show up
throughout Pit 4 and is not always mined. Coal seams to be extracted include
the Pinnacle~2,3,4u5 riders. A lithologic log of hole 2-19-B1-2 at Pit
4 is attached.
Coal Quality:
The Grassy Creek htine has produced coal from the Pinnacle and Pinnacle
riders. Future production will be from the blacksmith seam as well as Pin-
nacle. both coals are classified as bituminous with the follo~ving analysis:
BTU SULFUR t•?OISTL'RE ASH
Pinnacle 11,000 to 11,300 0.5 to 0.5 10.0 to 12.0 5.0 to 7.0
Blaci<s~nith 11,465 0.4 to 0.7 10.5 4.0 to 7.0

2-35 II.D-5
