1.0 INTRODUCTION
ICalia Archaeological Services was authorized by Raye s Associates
on March 15, 1980, to conduct cultural resources investigations for The
Rockcastle Company, Grassy Creek Coal Mine, near Hayden, Colorado. The
purpose of this investigation was to obtain data by field survey to
satisfy Section 2.04.4 of the Regulations of the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Board. The project area is located approximately 10.6 air
miles south-southeast of Hayden in Routt County, Colorado. The location
of the site surveyed is shown in Figure 1. The survey was conducted at
Township SN, Range 87W, Sections 20, 21, 29, 31, and 32. Approximately
200 acres were intensively surveyed within this area. The area surveyed
is designated by Sites 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 in Figure 2. This report dis-
cusses the setting of the area, survey methodology, and findings.
• SETTING OF THE REGION
The history, archaeology, and environment of the region is typical
' of northwestern Colorado. The study area is in the Yampa River drainage.
Grassy Creek dischrages into the Yampa River.
The major river drainages in northwestern Colorado include the
Colorado (Grand) River, which begins at Grand Lake and is fed by the Fraser,
the Blue, and the Eagle Rivers. The Yampa Valley's major river is the Yampa
(Hear) and is fed by the Little Snake and the Elk Rivers as well as smaller
creeks.
The climate of the area is extreme. Summers are dry, temperature
can go beyond 100 degrees Farenheit, and in winter the temperature can drop
several degrees below zero. This extreme change in climate makes it diffi-
cult to farm and has restricted other developments. The climate and the
fluctuating seasonal water sources make agriculture a limited business.
•
II.B-5
