t Exhibit B - Site Description - Vegetation Information
Th
ff
d li
b
e area to
e a
ecte
es on a northwesterly-facing slope at an
' elevation of approximately 9,600 feet. The mine area itself is open but
most of the surrounding area upslope from the mine is forested. Downslope
' the site opens to a meadow dominated by willows. Much of the proposed
affected area has been previously disturbed. The Exhibit E2 map included
' h
i
ill
t
t
th
t
t
f
h
i
l
di
b
d
ere
n
us
ra
es
e ex
en
e prev
o
t
ous
y
stur
e
area.
' Two distinct vegetation communities and the vegetation growing on the
mine site itself characterize the subject area. An aspen/pine community is
present upslope and to the south of the old workings; and a willow
community is present downslope of the workings and adjacent to Gold Creek.
' The forested area has been harvested for mine props and logs for
' construction.
Because of the variation in relative disturbance, and rapid changes in
' composition of the plant community over short distances, a vegetation
inventory giving estimated percentage composition of the various species in
' the plant community is not practical. Rather, a species list of the
vegetation observed in the affected area and immediately adjacent lands is
'
given below. The list is arranged in approximate order of the overall
' relative abundance of various species noted but does not distinguish
between traces. The density of the ground cover basal density ranges from
' zero percent on the mine bench to an estimated 70 percent locally in
patches near the stream. In the forested area above the mine, the
1 aspen/pine canopy cover is estimated to range from about 40 to 70 percent
and consists of trees ranging from about 5 to 18 inches diameter (at breast
height). The ground cover in the forested area is relatively low
1
' -9-
