(~v~~~ ~~~~~~.~~i~T~ s~~~~o~~s) <br />Problem Area <br />Graded or cleared areas ~ihich may be subjected to erosion and ~•ihere perennial <br />vegetative cover is needed. <br />Vegetation cannot be expected to provide an erosion control cover and prevent <br />soil slippage on a soil that is unstable due to structure, water movement, <br />or excessive steepness of slope: <br />t•tinimum soil conditions needed for the establishment and maintenance of a <br />perennial vegetative cover. <br />A. Over 25 percent silt and clay. <br />B. Sufficient pore space and depth to permit adequate root penetration. <br />C. Favorable pH level and free from toxic substances. <br />D. Slopes which are not subject to slippage due to slow permeability or other <br />causes. <br />I. Site Preparation <br />A. Grade as needed and feasible to permit the use of conventional <br />equipment for seedbed preparation, seeding, mulch application and <br />anchoring, and maintenance. <br />o B. Install needed erosion control practices such as interceptor ditches, <br />dikes and terraces, contour ripping, erosion stops, channel liners, <br />~ and desilting basins. <br />II. Seedbed Preparation <br />A. Apply fertilizer according to soil test recommendations when soils <br />are reasonably uniform and precipitation and/or irrigation is <br />adequate. <br />= B. l•lork fertilizer into the soil to a depth of 4 inches with a disc, <br />spring tooth harrow or other suitable equipment. Continue tillage until <br />a reasonably uniform, fine firm seedbed is prepared.
