In order to reach <br />the property, one exits Interstate-70 at Silt (Exit 97) and <br />proceeds east on the south access road a little less than one- <br />half mile to a north/south road, thence south about one-half <br />mile to another east/west road, thence east a distance of <br />approximately 0.5 miles to the pit entrance. <br />History. The operator was granted an option to purchase <br />the subject property in the summer of 1981 by Barton Porter and <br />Carl 0. Short (see Exhibit 0). Test holes made in late summer <br />indicate the presence of commercial sand and gravel deposits in <br />acceptable quality and quantity on the approximate 1901 acres. <br />work was started immediately to obtain county and state approval <br />for removal of the natural resource. <br />Current Conditions. Map Exhibit C shows the outline of <br />the affected land, touching landowners, topography, hydrologic <br />factors and existing facilities. A small part of the <br />property is in use as a cattle feedlot; the remainder is <br />planted in corn and other crops. <br />Surrounding uses include residential/agricultural on the <br />east; the river on the north with hay meadows north of the <br />river; a trailer site, small portable sawmill and a county <br />gravel pit to west; and hay fields atop the mesa to the south. <br />Geologic Setting. The affected land is located west of <br />the Grand Hogback Monocline on the eastern side of the <br />-5- <br />
