CL'EP.UfEW
INTROOIJCTION ~ OVERVIEW ~ SIT APPLIr~TION ~c g
• FOUNTAIN COLONY pjT
The Fountain Colony Pit is located about 2 miles southwest of the City of
Fountain in E1 Paso County. The permit area is 312.8 acres. The land is an
upland mesa with deposits of gravel ranging from a few feet to as much as 30 or
more feet in depth. The deposits are continuous with the deposits mined by
Broderick ~ Gibbons, Cooley Gravel Company, and the City of Colorado Springs whose
operations are on nearby land to the south and west.
The mining plan is divided into several phases with mining occurring in a
north to south direction. Within phases, mining will occur in a west to east
direction so as to reduce visibility of the operation from Fountain and Interstate
25 to a minimum.
Reclamation of the site will be for industrial/residential purposes, but the
plan presented here also contains a plan to return the land to range uses in the
even development does not occur. The final topography will be highly similar to
• what was present in the pre-operation condition, except that where gravel has been
removed the final elevation will be lower by an amount approximately equal to the
depth of the gravel removed. Reclamation costs are estimated to be 551,000.
The operation is above any groundwater. Wildlife resources on the site are
extremely limited. Soils, for the most part, are favorable in location and depth
to provide sufficient material for adequate revegetation. The native vegetation
of the site is mostly grassland with localized areas of intense growths of Yucca
as well as heavy growths of various shrubs in the arroyo bottoms. Trees are
almost non-existent. The climate is warm and moderately arid. Wind will be
largest factor in erosion.
Fountain Ordinance No. 766 provides local government approval for the
operation. The Fountain Colony Pit is owned by Fountain Colony Investment
Company who is also the owner of both the surface and subsurface rights.
• page 1 of 1 OVERVIEW
