SOILS INfORMATIO~i <br />• <br />there is a more loamy material and would be classified as a Kim loam. Once again <br />variations in soil type at a much finer scale than the S.C.S. uses occur over <br />short distances. <br />The northeastern corner of the site is occupied by a large area of Ustic <br />Torrifluvents and Kim loam with small amounts of the ManzanoLa and Heldt clays. <br />Much of the area occupied by these soils is outside the permit area, but is on <br />property under the ownership of the permit applicant. <br />In a few of the deeper and larger valleys on the south end of the property <br />~J <br />• <br />the Pierre Shale outcrops directly on the surface. This shale or mudstotie <br />formation rapidly weathers into a heavy, sticky clay which does not support much <br />vegetation. In the bottoms of some of the washes, the formation directly outcrops <br />in a rock form. These areas would not be included in a soil survey, but for <br />purposes of designing a reclamation plan must be noted. The shale appears to <br />weather into either the Manzanola or Heldt clay soil, but where coarse materials <br />are available can also develop into a rich Kim loam or the Ustic Torrifluvents. <br />Because the shale is under the gravels, these areas should not be directly <br />affected by extraction activities, but may be used for minor support facilities <br />such as roads to and from mining areas. <br />SOIL SALVAGE. <br />~dP REVELATION: Within the area to be mined, the <br />soils which will need to be stripped are the Schamber, the Razor, and a small <br />amount of the Stoneham. Salvage depths on these soils are indicated on their <br />respective diagrams. The depth of salvage ranges from 10" to 12". Of course, <br />salvage could go much deeper on these soils, but this depth is considered to be <br />the maximum depth for good quality topsoil which can be used as a growth medium. <br />Soils below this depth become increasingly adverse in their characteristics and <br />page 6 of 7 Exhibit I <br />
