In those cases, the road would be eliminated along with adjacent mining <br />areas. <br />Backfilling of the mining areas will generally not be done. However, some <br />small valleys may be backfilled as a result of the reclamation; but this would <br />only apply to the small valleys. The larger valleys will be left as they are <br />except where erosion damages must be corrected. <br />Catchment basins and other erosion and sediment control structures will <br />remain after the operation in order to control the run-off from the reclamation <br />areas. This action is considered imperative to inhibiting a renewal of the severe <br />erosion which has occurred in the past. <br />At the end of this exhibit are four cross-sections very similar to the <br />sections included in the mining plan. These cross-sections show the existing <br />surface topography and the final reclamation topography. In most instances the <br />• final reclamation topography will be coincident with the bottom of the gravel, but <br />in some cases it may differ slightly. Also, each section has a vertical <br />exaggeration of from 5 to 10 times. This is indicated beside the line label and <br />is included in parentheses. An indication of "(5v:lh)" means that the vertical <br />scale is exaggerated 5 times the horizontal scale. This results in hills looking <br />like mountains and shallow swales looking like canyons, but this format reveals <br />much more detail than would be visible in a 1:1 scale cross-section. <br />WATER: During the mining process, catchment basins and dams will be necessary in <br />some of the large washes to prevent damage to adjacent land resulting from run- <br />off. The catchments will generally be small and will only hold the run-off water <br />for a short period of time.
