RECLAMATION PLAN
EXHI I E
• RECLAMATION P~
OVERVIEW: Because of the poor soil quality and general lack of precipitation, the
reclamation of the Fountain Colony Pit will not be especially easy. Furthermore,
the upper, weathered portions of the Pierre Shale underlying the gravel will
require careful design considerations.
The final land use proposed for the area will be as a developed area for
industrial and/or residential purposes. In order to provide satisfactory
reclamation security, an "alternate" plan is also included which will revegetate
the land after mining is completed on any particular phase. In the event that
development does not occur in a suitably brief period after completion of mining
of any particular portion of the project, the revegetation plan would be
implemented to provide for suitable protection of the surface from wind and water
erosion and return the land temporarily to a rangeland use.
• Topsail will be replaced. It must be replaced because the weathered, upper
portions of the Pierre Shale underneath the gravel would be exceedingly difficult
to revegetate. There does not appear to be any lack of soil. In fact, in some
areas, the soil and overburden layer is almost too thick. But from a reclamation
point of view this is a benefit because there is a severe lack of soil on areas
where the gravel is very near the surface.
The final topography will not actually change much after completion of the
mining and reclamation. The gravel layer is only about 20 to 30 feet thick.
After removal of the gravel the surface will be lowered a comparable amount. The
actual configuration will not change much from its current condition as a plateau
or mesa like structure with steep slopes extending to the Fountain Creek
floodplain.
• page 1 of 10 E)thibit E
