Long
Division Director
The Division received your letter dated January 5, 2001 regarding the new mining application for the S & H
Mine, File No. M-2000-158. Your letter states that two sites, SWL870 and SWL814 are located within the
boundaries of the proposed gravel pit. [n particular, site SWL814 is in the process of being listed on the State
Register of Historic Places. Your letter was forwarded to Platte Sand & Gravel LLC for comment.
Platte Sand & Gravel LLC provided the Division with an enlarged map of the monument grounds. The map
depicts [he affected land boundaries from the monument. In addition, the applicant provided a letter from the
Platteville Historical Society stating that the mining set backs are sufficient to protect the site and the road leading
into [he site.
The Division is required to ensure that structures within 200 feet of the affected land are protected from mining
and reclamation (Rule 6.4.19 of the Construction Material Rules and Regulations). The applicant committed to
maintaining setbacks greater than 200 fee[, therefore, the Division believes these structures will be adequately
protected from the mining and reclamation operations of the S & H Mine.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me a[ 303-866-4943.
Sincerely,
~~ S~~
Erica Crosby
Environmental Protection Specialist
Enclosure(s)
cc: Carl Mount; DMG
Cheryl Linden; AGO
Rocky Hoffschneider; Platte Sand & Gravel, LLC.
Stevan O'Brian; Environment, Inc.
