September 1, 2006
David Lehmann
Bureau of Land Management .
U.S. Department of the Interior
2815 H Road
Grand Junction, CO 81506
RE: Red Cliff Coal Mine and Railroad Spur
Dear Mr. Lehmann:

2006AUG3$ P~ 2~3~
Although as a nation I wished that we were less dependent upon oil products, domestic or
foreign, but such is not the case and the Red Cliff Coal Mine will help supply our needs. My
concern is for the manner and location of the railroad spur proposed near and crossing 10 Road
in North Mack, CO.
We purchased the property over a decade ago with the alternative of relocating a family suffering
from asthma from Phoenix to our 135 acres in North Mack. We have developed the property
into a producing farm and have recently completed our residence at 1957 10 Road.
Our area is dotted with a few residences, most with attached farms or ranches. It is peaceful,
quiet area where an occasional dog's bazk or the retying up of the local crop duster's engine
pierces the otherwise silent scene.
Such will not be the case once the Mack spur is in use. In addition to the noise and dust, I have
concerns about access between our property and town. In the past year, our neighborhood of
eight residences, have had the misfortune to have required the emergency services of fire trucks
and ambulance twice. All three incidents were during the day when the train would be in
operation, and potentially have blocked or detained these emergency services being delivered in
a timely manner.
My concerns would be ameliorated by lowering or raising above road level to allow passage of
the train and vehicles on the road at the same time. Landscaping is often used to screen off
sights or sounds-such could be employed here to both the benefit of the residents and as a
demonstration of goodwill on the part of the mining company in investing in both the community
and their transportation infrastructure.
I appreciate your consideration of my concerns and remedies in making decisions regarding the
Red Cliff Coal Mine an~,dj~att~endi~n/g railroad spur in Mack, CO.
Sincerely, ~~~~~~''~"' / ',
Ron Wallace
1957 10 Road
Mack, CO 81525
970 858 9890
