Catherine Robertson
Grand Junction Field Manager
Bureau of Land Management
U.S. Department of the Interior
215 H. Road
Grand Junction, CO 81506
Re: Red Cliff Coal Mine and Railroad Spur Issues
Dear Ms. Robertson:
Page I of 2
We are focusing on the proposed railroad spur and its impacts. We live in the valley area West of Mack Mesa,
which will be impacted by the railroad spur. My first question, is why was not the original plan several years
ago to have East Salt Wash at its head When Tri-State Generations owned all the land in that area, I know for
a fact that this was considered. I also am aware of a letter furnished to the residents of this area that was
written by Mack Mesa, Jeff Williams, developer, who offered the rail road the old spur to save the homes on 10
Road
The railroad spur is proposed to cross the Highline Canal and proceed south east to cut into the area of Mack
Mesa near Highline Lake, WiII we be hearing that Cam will be building, in the future. a Power Plant there,
because of the access to the water, or have these puns already been considered. I know in the meeting that
was held in Mack, several months ago, this was not brought to anyone attention, but also at that meeting ft was
said that none of the BLM Permits had yet to be applied for and that this was just a proposal plan, stated by
Cathy Hall and also stated by Josh Penry
The purposed line will now make an impact on the newly grown antelope herds that are just beginning to come
back, after the building of the Gas Plant on 6.5 road, and the new power lines in that same area. Doe wildlife
not matter in this area, What type of protection will the wildlife have from the trains?
Emergency Services: THIS IS A MAJOR CONCERN FOR MY FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS
Will BLM be willing to help the local residents adjust to not having time saving emergency medical response?
Even members of the local fire department and rescue squads are concerned for the time frame in emergency
calls north of the proposed tracks. Most of the people north of this area are elderly and have lived in the area
all their adult lives, is it fair to say to them, oh welt, so sorry???
Mitigation: CAM came in here under false pretence and acquired a lot of property not telling the owners what
their plans were. Now there is not much trust in their statements, as for their being onty 2 trains per day, it was
failed to mention that each train will contain apx. 100 cars, and where will these care be parked, in the town of
Mack, which basicaity has not been made aware of any of Phis progress. We own a business in Mack, and we
see no future in this at all, and what about the new homes that are being built in this area, these people bought
homes to be in the country and have a desert.lcountry setting, not to have 500,000 or more homes in the
middle of a coal storage area.
What about the coal dust in the area of the Mack Wash and its tributaries? What effect will this have on the fish
and wildlife in those area??? As all of this flows to the Colorado River??
There is talk of a 2nd mine opening also, will this also be harvested thti the same channel and into the town of
Mack?
' I DO NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEM WITH THE MINE BEING THERE AND FURNISHING COAL TO OTHER
STATES IN NEED, BUT WHAT I DO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IS THE WAY THAT IT IS BEING PUT
TOGETHER AND THE COMMUNITY AND PEOPLE ARE JUST BEING RUN OVER.
' And 1 last thing, as normal for anything that concerns the TOWN OF MACK, WE HAVE TO GO TO THE CITY
OF FRUPTA TO BE HEARD? ISN'T THAT A LITTLE Biz OF A SLAM IN THE FACE? BLM SEEMS TO
REALLY HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON WITH MESA COUNTY GOVERNMENT. THEY HAVE NO
CONCERN FOR THE LITTLE TOWN NOR R RESIDENTS.
.
