Mr. Kazl C. Koehler
December 10, 1992
Page 3
Taking the above recommendations into consideration, Simon Hydro-Search proposes the following
monitoring program in support of the permit expansion for the Orchard Valley Mine:
• Afield visit to all springs, ponds and drainages should be conducted twice per year
(spring and fall).
• Ponds and springs discharging at least 1 gpm should be sampled for water quality
analyses including field pazameters (pH, temperature and conductance);
• Ponds should be monitored for water level; and
• Drainage lOD-2 & lOD-7, which have had a flow of at least 1 gpm in the past, should
be monitored for dischazge and sampled for water quality analyses if the flow exceeds
1 gpm.
Figure 2 (Attachment 3) presents the proposed surface water features fur future monitoring in the
expansion area and shows the location of surface water sampling stations proposed for drainage tOD-2
and lOD-7. Figure 2 also attempts to show how most of the ponds and drainages located within the
expansion area are associated with drainage lOD-2. For the purpose of this proposed monitoring program
and for the sake of clarity, individual drainages which occur between the ponds aze not named.
The hydrologic features proposed for elimination from the permit expansion area monitoring program are:
1) Spring 10-8: No indication of this spring was ever observed to confirm its existence;
2) Pond 15-3: This pond does not exist;
3) All drainages with the exception of IOD-2 and lOD-7: Drainage lOD-2 supplies all
ponds in Section 10 with water with the exception of Ponds ]0-5 and ]0-12. This
drainage is fed by the Overland Ditch located in Section 3 and the amount of flow present
in lOD-2 is controlled by local property owners through the use of a flood gate. A flume
exists on lOD-2 at the point of intersection with the Overland Ditch. Flow from the
Overland Ditch into lOD-2 should continue to be measured at the Flume. Drainage
lOD-7 is a major drainage crossing the eastern portion of the permit expansion area.
SW~i on Roatcap Creek is too faz downstream to provide adequate data for drainage
lOD-7.
4) Pond 90: This pond lies outside the azea of projected angleof-draw due to mine
subsidence.
lJ
"~~ ~XIItlIIIWY R W unUW~J°c~JISWW~IfII
