in reestablishment of a balanced piezometric surface at approximately the
• same level which existed prior to mining. Any minor changes in the
piezometric surface which may occur are not expected to be significant since
the overall hydrologic balance within the groundwater basin will not be
effected.
The localized cone of depression resulting from mine drainage will result in
a shift in groundwater flow direction in areas surrounding the active
workings toward the mine. This localized shift in flow direction is a
natural consequence of underground mining operations and represents the
hydrologic systems mechanism for reestablishing a balanced piezometric
surface. Localized changes in groundwater flow patterns are not expected to
extend for any significant distance beyond the perimeter of Southfield's mine
workings. In addition, reestablishment of the piezometric surface as
discussed in the preceding section will also result jn reestablishment of
natural groundwater flow patterns similar to those which existed prior to
mining.
• It should be noted that natural groundwater flows will tend to be deflected
toward the underground mine workings under the influence of the cone of
depression. This deflection will result in continuity of downgradient flow
and some natural mitigation of reductions in downgradient groundwater flows
as flow lines converge around the active mine area to reestablish lateral
flow continuity at some point downgradient.
•
•° ~ L
C:1TM\8601VOL.2\NEC.PLN
09/30/944:30Pm WP51/cmc 2.05.6.44 Revised 9/30/94
