• Within the mine area, abandoned and flooded underground coal mines which
are utilized as groundwater supplies are located in the Rex Carbon Seam
which is approximately four hundred feet above the interval disturbed by
Southfield operations. Intervening low permeability strata provide an
effective hydrologic barrier to potential mining related impacts on this
groundwater source.
Similarly, the Trinidad Sandstone is located approximately four hundred
feet below the interval effected by Southfield operations. Similar
stratigraphic conditions preclude any significant extension of potential
groundwater impacts from Southfield operations on this unit.
Groundwater Consequences. Potential mining related groundwater impacts
will be limited to the strata actually disturbed by mining operations and
possibly perched groundwater reservoirs in the Vento Coal Seam, which is
approximately one hundred feet above the interval to be mined. It should
• be noted that groundwater resources in the Yento Seam have no history of
beneficial utilization in this area due primarily to depth of the Vento
Seam, water quality limitations, limited localized groundwater demand, and
the availability of suitable surface and groundwater resources from other
more accessible and consistent sources.
As discussed above and in preceding sections, probable groundwater
hydrological consequences will be confined to surficial colluvium/alluvium
in the Southfield loadout area and the interval disturbed by mining
extending up to and including abandoned mine workings in the Vento Seam
within the mine area. Probable consequences of mining and related
activities include the following specific impacts:
0
0
0
0
• o
0
Minor Reductions in Down-gradient Groundwater Flows
Possible Dewatering of Abandoned Mines in the Vento Seam
Localized Reductions in the Piezometric Surface
Localized Alteration of Groundwater Flow Patterns
Passible Increases in Recharge as a Result of Mine Dewatering
Potential Increases in the Levels of TDS and Concentrations
of Specific Chemical Constituents
2.05.6-40
