INTRODUCTION
Sunbelt presently owns Peacock Coal Mine and plans to resume mining from
private coal leases on an area southwest of Hesperus, Colorado. With
this application, Sunbelt has prepared a mining and reclamation plan in
order to continue mining operations. Sunbelt is requesting approval for
this area of mining under the regulatory program of the Colorado Surface
Coal Mining Reclamation Act.
Geographic Setting
The Peacock Coal Mine is located southwest of Hesperus, Colorado, on
County Road 120, as shown on Figure 1, General Location Map. The mine
site is approximately 5 miles southwest of Hesperus, Colorado. The
elevation of the portal locations for the Peacock Coal Mine is
approximately 7,600 feet above sea level. The entire mining operation
is in La Plata County, Colorado.
r~
L
The Peacock Coal Mine Portal Area is drained by one perennial drainage,
known as Hay Gulch. Hay Gulch runs in a southwest direction and flows
into the La Plata River approximately 8 miles from the Peacock Coal
Mine.
Background of Peacock Coal Mine
The Peacock Coal Kline is a small Colorado underground coal mine with its
office at the mine near Hesperus, Colorado. Sunbelt, which now owns the
Peacock Coal Mine, is engaged exclusively in coal mining on lands which
it either owns or leases in the area around Hesperus.
Operations began at the Peacock Coal Mine back in 1905 and have been
fairly continuous since that time, even during difficult economic years
in which other jobs were scarce in the area. Yearly production rates
for the Peacock Coal Mine since 1922 are shown in Table 1, Historical
• Production Rates.
1
