Hendricks Mining Co.
Caribou, Colorado
exploration
Development
Production
October 1, 1977
State of Colorado
Land Reclamation Board
Department of Platural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Room 615
Denver, Colorado 80203
Gentlemen:
Our headquarters and office are located at 3000 North 63rd,
Boulder, Colorado 80301, which was previously the Allied
Chemical Company milling operation. 'rlhen we took over the
operation in January, 1977, we inherited approximately 15 to
20 acres of tailings pond which is totally enclosed and has
no discharge. In working with the State Department of Health
we decided to initially cover the old tailings pond, which
has a very minimal background of radioactivity, with our tailings
which are primarily silica sand. ~'pon completion of this we
tivill enter into an agreement with the Flatirons Sand ar.d Gravel
Company of 3oulder whereby we will establish two evapoz•ation
ponds where they will come and haul away our tailings ::and for
use in their sand plant. This will eliminate our tailings
completely and we will have a totally enclosed mill system
whereby the water in our tailings will evaporate and tYie sand
will be an alternate product.
The square footage will be about 90000 square feet, or approxi-
mately two acres. Under the proposed agreement with Flatirons,
they are going to cover the remaining tailings pond we inherited
with topsoil which we can plant with trees and grasses that we
have been experimenting with on the existing tailings pond.
Our operation is a very small operation and we don't anticipate
any growth during the coming year. Should we increase our
operation, we will so notify you.
After talking with t'r[r. Campbell at the Land Reclamation Board
regarding this matter there seems to be some doubt as to whether
our milling operation comes under House Bill 1065. ':dc~ have
initiated this environmental program on our own and w'.11 continue
with it whether or not we arc required to do so.
Please advise us as to your recommendation. 'r7e look :'orward to
working with you on this proje t.
. Y rs truly,
as S. Hendricks
TSH/jlk
P.O. Box 653 Nederland, Colorado 80466 1-303-258-3806
