Description of Organization of Permit Document
This permit document is organized in such a manner that generally corresponds with the
CDMG regulations and includes information as required under Rules 2.03 Legal and
• Financial Information; 2.04 Environmental Resources; 2.05 Application for Permit for
Surface or Underground Mining Activities -Minimum Requirements for Operation and
Reclamation Plans; 2.06 Requirements for Permits for Special Categories of Mining; and
Rule 3 Bonding. The requirements of Rule 4 Performance Standards have been
incorporated into the appropriated discussions contained in Rule 2.
Further, supplemental information not included in the text of the document is provided in
the form of figures, tables, maps and exhibits.
Geographic Setting
The Colorado Coal Mine No. 1 is located approximately 4 miles northwest of Walsenburg,
Colorado on State Highway 69, as shown in Figure 1, General Location Map. State
Highway 69 provides direct access to the mine from Walsenburg. The elevation of the
mining area is approximately 6,300 feet above sea level. The area affected by the operation
is entuely within Huerfano County, Colorado.
The mine plan area is drained by two ephemeral streams, the Maitland and Gordon arroyos.
These drainages flow only in direct response to rainfall or snowmelt.
