5h1F402 - This site, recorded in 1975, was not evaluated by the
original recorder in terms of NRHP significance; however, it was reccm-
mended that the site be tested if in danger of disturbance. Revisitation
of this site during the Consolidation Coal inventory revealed a lack of
surficial evidence for cultural features, a lack of diagnostic artifacts,
and questionable potential for subsurface occurrence of cultural materi-
als. Further, the observable artifacts are scattered without noticeable
concentrations. Consequently, reexamination of the site has led to a
recommendation that testing is not necessary since it does not possess
the potential to yield information important to the prehistory of the
region. It is considered not eligible for nomination to the NRHP.
5.2.2 Sites Recorded by the Consolidation Coal Inventory
5RB2604 - This site consists of a collapsed cabin without
associated artifacts. No indications of the presence of subsurface
cultural features nor artifactual materials were observed. No informa-
tion on the structure was obtained from a search of the county land
records nor from an informant who grew up in the area. Because of the
lack of historical data regarding the cabin's construction date and an
apparent lack of subsurface cultural materials, this site does not
possess a level of significance necessary for eligibility to the NRHP.
5RB2605 - This site is comprised of a collapsed dugout struc-
ture and a log outhouse. These structures formed part of a homestead
• built ca. 1940.1945, according to informants. Also present at one time
was a log cabin, which is no longer in evidence. The site was a short-
lived homestead according to informants and by a lack of abundant arti-
factual materials. The site has partially lost its integrity through
the disappearance of the primary dwelling structure and, based on field
observations, has a low potential for possessing subsurface cultural
materials. For these reasons, it is not considered to be significant in
terms of NRHP eligibility.
5MF1932 - The James Coal Mine was a relatively small opera-
tion, active between 1937 and 1950. The overall integrity of the site is
deteriorated, with the loadout facility and mine portals being collapsed.
Similarly, no intact machinery exists, with only parts scattered about
the site area. The lack of integrity, along with a construction date of
less than 50 years ago, recommend that this site is not eligible for
nomination to the Plational Register of Historic Places. It should be
noted, however, that the mine was apparently associated with the James
homestead (5MF1941) (see below) and should be considered within the
context of that site's significance evaluation as a date source for local
coal procurement during the homesteading era.
5R62606/5h1F1936 - The segment of the original Meeker-Axial-
Craig wagon road occurring within the project area is evident through
road cuts in the bases of hills crossed by the route. The earlier road
was later used as an automobile road prior to construction of the pres-
. ent highway in 1932. No architectural or structural features associated
with the road bed were noted along the stretch under study. Although the
early wagon road should be considered as being important to the area's
33
