Kattenberg;
`°'DM°o
3~~~
O'Y OF'~~
For tl</d/ije-
For Prople
We have reviewed your application for a Special Use Permit for a sand and aggregate pit east of Granby,
Colorado and have rho foIlowing comments.
The Cobrado I)ivison of Wr7dlife does own the property to the southeast of the proposed pit. This
property was acquired in 1999 for the preservation of wildlife habitat. The primary use by wildlife is
wintering elk and deer as well as e~r,,,..,~..~ habitat for a variety of species. Winter habitat in Grand County
is limited, especially in light ofthe rapid development of adjacent lands. The CROW acquired this
property to provide big game winter range, alleviate game damage and fmancisl impacts oa adjacent
agritxth»ral produca~s.
With that in mind we are concerned with several items as it reLtes to the proposed activity at the pit.
L .Operating season- it is very important to avoid disturbance to the wintering area from mid November
thru Apn7 each year. Will the pit be closed in the wing?
2. Noise and dust abatement affecting those species which use the area in the summer for fawning and
summer habitat.
3. Trespass on CROW Lends. This parcel is Closed to human activity from November 15 thru April 1 S
each year. A project Las been reque~ed to fence ilre parcel, but $ has not been done to date.
There is aLro more use by w-Idlife of the projected pit rhea idemiSed is your proposal While it is correct
that birds, includ'mg raptors, and rodents use the properly. barge ungulates, especially deer and elk (up
to 100F), hive been seen foraging and moving through the property to the hay meadow to the west.
We note that you have a noxious weed pLm and would encourage use ofnative grasses, forties end
shrubs. The straw sed'mtent fIlters should be certified weed free. Early detetxion snd treatment is essential
for both your property and the State of Colorado's.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES.
