Douglas-fir stands are depauperate of the greatest majority
• of plants species located at the project site. Litter comprises
45-65% of the relative cover on the forest floor, and bare ground
occupies 15-25% of the relative cover.
Ponderosa Pine Type:
This vegetation type is dominated by P. ponderosa. Ponderosa Pine
is scattered across the project site and is found in every m~jjor vegeta-
tion stand-type. Most of the pines are found along draws an~i on all
slopes except north-facing ones which are (dominated mostly Icy douglas-fir).
The relative cover of ponderosa pine ranges from 60-85% in the larger,
well-defined pine stands. Other coronon plants in this stand••type are:
douglas-fir.(P. menziesii), red cedar (J. scopulorum), mount~iin mahogany
(C. montanus), ninebark (Physocarpus monogynus), wax currant (Ribes
cereum), Boulder raspberry (Rubus deliciosus), golden aster (Heterotheca
• villosa), pasture sage (A. frigida), and prairie sage (A. lu~ioviciana).
Ponderosa pine stands are more easily vegetated by other plant species
than occur in douglas-fir stands. Litter in pine stands occupies 25-35%
of the relative gound cover, with about 25-30% of the area in pine stands
existing as barground. An occassional ponderosa pine invades exposed areas
on roadcuts, and rocky outcrops. Average height of ponderos~~ pine trees
is 6.8m (range 0.8-10.5m).
Riparian Type
This vegetation type is very diverse as to species numbers and
types of species. A mixture of plant communities exists along Ralston
Creek. The riparian vegetation is confined to a narrow area along the
creek, and transitions from one plant community to another are usually
. gradual. However, in some areas along the creek, plant community transi-
tions are rather abrupt.
J-B
