RECEIVED MOV 2 9 1995 <br />The following information partalninq to wildlife is provided !or <br />use by the Ninad Land Reclamation Board in their consideration o! <br />a mining permit !or Somerset Nininq Company. <br />The Colorado Division o! Wildlife does hereby Lind, to the best o! <br />our knowledge, that the impact on wildlife o! the proposed refuse <br />pile will be moderate. <br />REFUSS PILE LOCATION: T 11 S, R 90 M, Sec 8 West o! Elk Creek <br />WILDLIFE SPECIES LIST: Deer, elk, black bear, blue grouse, coyote, <br />bobcat, mountain lion, raptors (including golden and bald eagles), <br />numerous small mammals and birds. <br />TiU2E11TENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES WHICM MAY BE IMPACTED: Nosthern <br />bald eagle (winter). Colorado Squawlish, Humpback Chub, Rasorback <br />Sucker (downstreaa in the Gunnison River) <br />ASSESSMENT OF IMPACT ON WILDLIFE: The refuse pile and access road <br />will destroy an amount o! wildlife habitat, including critical <br />winter range !or deer and elk, equal to the acreage involved. This <br />will have a severe impact on wildlife found in the immediate <br />vicinity of the mine and refuse pile. It will have a small elect <br />on the overall wildlife, including deer and elk, populations in the <br />North Fork valley. Any waste rater rhich is released untreated <br />will negatively a!lect downstream fisheries. <br />• RECOMMENDATION FOR WILDLIFE ENHANCElti!!i'T: All rater discharges <br />should be controlled, monitored and trusted i! necessary in order <br />to maintain the rater quality in the North Fork River and <br />downstream. <br />NINE RECLAMATiOM RECOMMENDATION: cTpon closure o! the mine the <br />refuse pile and access road should be graded and contoured to match <br />the surrounding terrain. it should be replanted witls native <br />grass}s, !orbs and shrubs.
