Drill Hole Abandonment Methods:
' Monitor Well Completion
Several of these exploration holes may be converted to hydrologic
' monitoring wells. In accordance with 43 CFR II 3484.1(a), prior
to the conversion of an exploration drill hole to a monitor well,
authorization will be obtained from the regulatory authority. In
the event a monitoring well is completed at a site, the detailed
' well completion report will be forwarded to the appropriate
agencies. It is anticipated that wells will be constructed with
20 slot screen and 8/12 silica sand or a pre-packed, stainless
steel or PVC well screen depending upon depth. A bentonitic plug
will be placed above and below the screened interval to prohibit
vertical migration and cross contamination of aquifers. Figure
' 3, Typical Monitor Well Completion, illustrates the typical
completion method. Once the well is no longer required, it will
be grouted from the bottom to top with a cement grout. The
casing will be cut off two to three feet below the ground
' surface, and the surrounding soil will be used to backfill the
void left by the removal of the casing.
' Drill Hole Plugging
Drill holes which are not converted to monitor wells will be
' abandoned as illustrated in Figure 4, Drill Hole Plugging Method.
Each hole will be plugged with a cement slurry or other suitable
plugging material through potential underground mineable coal
' beds and through aquifers for a distance of at least 50 feet
above and below. All holes will be capped with at least 5 feet
of cement. Reclaimed drill hole locations will be marked with a
' steel fence post, when located outside of plowed fields. All
drill hole locations will be accurately surveyed, and distinctly
numbered allowing for future identification.
t Presented in Appendix 1 are Technical Data Sheets provided by
Colloid Environmental Technologies Co. on two products that we
request approval as a "suitable media" for well abandonment.
' These products are Volclay Grout and Pure Gold Grout. We also
request that similar products provided by other suppliers also be
approved. These products are deemed superior to cement as they
' are less likely to crack or shrink with time.
Reclamation Plan:
' Reclamation activities will follow the completion of each hole as
closely as possible. Seeding of the drill sites and access roads
' will be accomplished in the first favorable seeding season
following the completion of the reclamation efforts.
24
