<br />2.04.8 CLI!l~TOLOGICI~L INFOR!l1~TION <br />The climate of the site is classified as highland semiarid/steppe and is <br />characterized by a wide seasonal range of conditions typical of inland <br />midlatitude locations. Sunshine is abundant, averaging 70 percent on an <br />annual basis. <br />Seasonal temperatures have ranged from 103 to -17oF (local climatological <br />data for Fruita for the period 1979 through 1982, (NOAA 1979-1982) with an <br />average temperature range of 75oF in July to 25oF in January (Table 2.04.8-1 ). <br />The average annual temperature for the area is 50.5°F. The first frost <br />typically occurs in late October or early November with the last frost <br />occurring in late April or early May. <br />Precipitation totals for the area are light with an annual average of 8.3 <br />inches. (Table 2.04.8-2). Frequent but light snowfall is short-lived due <br />to rapid melting. Rainfall occurs primarily in the summer as scattered <br />showers or thunderstorms. <br />The relative humidity averages between 20 and 40 percent during the sunnier <br />and 50 to 80 percent during the winter. <br />Wind speeds average 5 to 10 mph with the prevailing winds oriented along <br />the axis of the Grand Valley, which in the Fruita/Grand Junction area runs <br />northwest to southeast. <br /> <br />?~~/~ <br />ar r <br />;. <br />
